31st March – 14th May Judging *New Dates*

14th -28th May – Voting *New Dates*

Unfurling Ceremony – TBA

Due to work commitments, and schedules at the Lyon Court, the judging period has been extended to the 14th of May. Apologies for any inconvenience.

This is an exciting new project being led by The Girvan Arts Festival in partnership with Girvan Academy, Girvan Primary, Sacred Heart Primary, Invergarven School, Go Girvan, The Girvan Town Team, Girvan Youth Trust, Glendoune Community Association, Thriving Communities, The Girvan Tourist Information Point, Girvan Community Council, Girvan Lifeboat crew and South Ayrshire Council.

It was sparked into life by the chance visit one of the lifeboat crew to Caithness, which has its own flag. We thought that it would be a good idea to design a flag for Girvan and involve the community in its design.

Phillip Tibbetts, representative of the Lyon Court, Scotland’s legal heraldry body, has been working with us, and will visit all of Girvan’s schools to give some pointers about designing a flag, and providing a bit of historic background.

Competition entry forms are available here or by clicking on the button below. Entry forms can also be picked up from the library. Completed entries can either be emailed to us at info@girvanartsfestival.com or handed in to Girvan Library (at it’s new location in Knockcushan Street). Entries will be restricted to those with a KA26 postcode, but please contact us if you live outwith this area and feel that you have a connection to Girvan which you think makes you eligible to enter the competition.

A judging panel comprised of individuals from supporting organisations, including the Lyon Court, will whittle the entries down to a shortlist of four designs. Voting will then take place, online and by handing your votes in person to Girvan Library, the Tourist Information Point, the McKechnie Institute or the Glendoune Centre.

When a winner has been chosen, a flag will be manufactured and there will be an unfurling ceremony at some point over the summer.

The flag design will be a free, public symbol for all to use at will. We hope that the Tourist Information Point will be stocking flags for purchase by day of the unfurling ceremony.

This project is jointly funded by the Girvan Arts Festival, Girvan Community Council, the Girvan Town Team and the National Lottery Community fund, but we would welcome donations toward the not insignificant costs of designing, registering and producing a flag for our town.
