Douglas Maxwell - Setting the Stage - Girvan Arts Festival 2023

A son of Girvan, and one of Scotland’s top playwrights since his debut in 2000, Douglas Maxwell’s home town often features as a location in his work, which has been produced in almost every theatre in Scotland, and across the world: Our Bad Magnet, a play set in Girvan, ran for over a decade in South Korea and is currently being staged in Tokyo in a Japanese translation.

His recent work includes the musical Orphans, Man’s Best Friend, and the BAFTA-nominated Fatbaws, with Peter Mullan.

Douglas opened the 2023 Girvan Arts Festival and spoke to a sell-out audience about how Girvan shaped his work, about the Scottish theatre scene, and how he made a life as a writer.  The film of his talk is free to watch for those who didn’t manage to get tickets on the day, but we’d welcome donations towards next year’s festival if you really enjoy it. Many thanks to Susanne Arbuckle \ GoGirvan for the footage.
